The Town of Black Diamond has a new bylaw regarding it's business directory signs.

Mayor Sharlene Brown says when the three signs went up last year, historic down town businesses were posted on it at no cost, but she says with businesses continually coming and going, they were having to update the signs accordingly and they're finding they now have to enact a fee.

"As business changed hands, there's a cost of maintenance to those particular signs," she says, "and so, you know, businesses also have to take a responsibility to be able to say, 'when I'm establishing a business, if I want to be part of the process and have the free advertising, it'll cost me 60 dollars for a one time deal to put my name up there and if my business moves than part of that 60 dollars is to remove the name'."

She says the town doesn't profit from that fee, it's strictly to pay the sign service provider to put the letters up and take the letters down.

The business directory signs are located at the town office parking lot, the town-owned parking lot at Centre Avenue and 1st Street East and at the Foothills Lions Campground.

"They provide advertising, and long term advertising because those signs have been up there for over a year now and lots of people stop at those particular signs, they find directions, they find new things to see, you know, and it shows the actual location of each of the store fronts," Brown says, "so you know, for businesses, it gives visitors, residents and people coming into their businesses a way to get there."
