Residents of High River stepped up to help gather artifacts from the museum to try and lessen the damage. Wendy Scott had family belongings in the building at the time of the fire. She says "we put our artifacts into the museum, our family histories into the museum because we want them to be preserved and we want them in a safe place and it's unfortunate that this happens to museums, that they can and do catch fire." She adds that she hopes they can salvage as much as they can because it's not only the family's history, it's the history of the town and the community. 1st Street west between 3rd and 5th Avenue is closed while objects are removed from the building. So far there's no dollar estimate on what's been lost. |
