High River Historic Homes Tour 2010 (10:00AM)
See what eight High River historic homes look like from the inside out on the Museum of the Highwood’s sixth Historic Homes Tour. The homes featured on the tour represent very unique approaches to preservation, renovation and restoration. Enhancing the tour experience will be the fascinating stories visitors will hear about each home and its former occupants. Interestingly, in this civic election year, three of the homes were the residents of early High River mayors. Although the Museum of the Highwood building (the former CPR station) was damaged by fire on July 28, 2010, the tour is going ahead as planned. Ticket holders will start their tour outside the station, where they will pick up maps and guidebooks, then visit each of the homes in any order desired. Participants are urged to purchase tickets ($25) in advance by calling the Museum of the Highwood at 403-652-7156, or by visiting our office at #4, 609 Centre Street S.W. (next to Curves) in High River. Tickets may also be purchased by e-mail or the day of the tour. All proceeds will support the restoration and conservation of the collection.

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (1:00PM) What do false teeth, a disco ball, and cigarette butts have incommon? They’re all items recovered from along Canada’s shorelines during the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup!Register as a Site Coordinator or Cleanup Participant today for the 17th annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a national conservation program of the Vancouver Aquarium that has been running since 1994, it’s a great way to show your shoreline some love. Most shoreline litter originates from land and land-based activities, so by stepping up to ensure our litter doesn’t reach Canada’s waterways, we are all taking action in protecting our environment. In 2009, nearly 57,000 Canadians registered to cleanup 1,568 sites across Canada. Over 160,900 kg of litter was removed from a cumulative distance of 2,500 km of shoreline, which is equivalent to the approximate driving distance from Vancouver to the Manitoba/Ontario border. For more information, visit http://shorelinecleanup.ca or call 1-877-427-2422. People take different paths in life and their footprints can be just as telling as their destination. Shoes have always been a strong symbol in human culture. They are a representation of transition, as we walk from place to place in them. Shoes for a woman are so much more than just 'footwear'; they are what dreams are made of; they are magical and precious; they protect us. Shoes have played an important part in the myth, legend and folklore of history. Fairytales, most famously Cinderella, speak about a perfect fit and the delicate nature of a woman, virtue, hope and persistence. Shoes are a reflection of personal strength and inner beauty.
For the Love of Shoes showcases shoes donated by 12 Canadian female celebrities from the world of television, music, sports and politics, which are transformed into series of unique works of art by 14 Canadian designers and artists.
The exhibit celebrates the feminine and reflects the change in the lives of those with breast cancer. Embedded in the shoes are the artists' and donors' personal stories of how breast cancer has affected them.
For the Love of Shoes is a project in partnership with the Alberta College of Art + Design, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The exhibit is curated by Dee Fontans of ACAD.

Hundreds of communities across Canada, including Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal, Kelowna, Quebec City, and many more, do not currently fluoridate their water. And interestingly they do not necessarily have higher than average rates of dental decay. (In fact, all but one city in BC has stopped fluoridating their water and the province is said to have the lowest rates of dental decay in the country.) Why have they pulled the plug on fluoridation when the benefits of fluoride are so well known? What do they know, or think they know, that we might want to know too?
Come learn the answer in this captivating information packed presentation. This presentation will offer a balanced perspective on the pros and cons of adding hydrofluorosilic acid (fluoride) to our water in the light of modern day research and studies. We will also talk about different filtration systems for fluoride removal or reduction, for those so inclined.

Sometimes good things end. That's just the way life is. Sometimes, bad things continue due to neglect or fear. This isn't the way life should be. So many people hook up with partners that are unhealth for them, then find that they can't bring themselves to break it off -- sometimes out of fear of being alone, sometimes through convincing by their friends or family, sometimes through concern of how they will look sometimes through simple neglect. Going through a relationship break up can be devastating and scary. But , it can be a time of persronal growth.
